What It Does
Bitwarden stores and autofills your passwords, so you can use a long, unique password for every account instead of reusing the same one everywhere. It generates strong random passwords, syncs your vault across all your devices, and fills login forms automatically when you visit a site or open an app.
Everything in the vault is encrypted before it ever leaves your device, so even Bitwarden itself can’t read your stored passwords.
Key Features
- Cross-platform sync one vault, available on every device and major browser
- Password generator creates long, random, unique passwords on demand
- Free tier is genuinely usable unlimited passwords and devices, unlike many competitors that gate sync behind a paywall
- Built-in 2FA code storage (Premium) can hold TOTP codes alongside passwords for one-tap autofill, similar to what Google Authenticator does separately
- Open source the code is publicly auditable, which matters for a tool holding your most sensitive data
- Secure sharing share individual logins with family or teammates without exposing the raw password
Why It’s on This List
Reusing passwords is still one of the most common ways accounts get compromised. Bitwarden removes the excuse: it makes unique, strong passwords as easy as clicking “autofill,” and its free tier doesn’t cripple the core feature the way some rivals do. Being open source also means security researchers can and do inspect it, rather than users having to trust a closed black box with their entire digital life.
Worth Knowing
- Your master password is the one password you still have to remember and protect there’s no recovery if you lose it and haven’t set up an emergency access contact
- Pairs naturally with an authenticator app: use Bitwarden for passwords, keep 2FA codes in Authenticator (or in Bitwarden Premium itself) for defense in depth
- Self-hosting is available for anyone who doesn’t want their vault on Bitwarden’s servers at all
